The inspiration for this
site came from my good friend John Bewsher. He is continually extolling a book
by the Reverend Miller called Every Day of Life'. He is so enthralled
with this book that, several years ago, just for his own edification, he typed
it all into a computer. I recently discovered this effort, and suggested that
he share this gem with the world, by putting it up on the Web. He agreed and so
this site was conceived.
There are several other sources, on the Web,
for Miller's works, but non is complete, so it was incumbent on me to gather
all his works into one place. I have given due credit to these sources on
separate pages.
It would be nice to be able to add some biographical
background. At the moment I know very little about the gentleman. I'm not even
aware of his given names. Apparently he was born in 1840 and died in 1912. One
bookseller (novalisbooks.com) says He was a was a Presbyterian pastor
serving churches in the Philadelphia area & was one of the most popular
Christian authors of his time'. If you know some of his history or can point me
in the right direction please send me an e-mail
I have found a civil
war reference to the Christian Commission, at Harper's Ferry. A Rev. J. R.
Miller was the agent for the Department of the Cumberland. I don't know if this
was the same man.
Just showcasing the currently available texts, means
that this site will exceed 500 pages. If all of Dr. Miller's texts were
available the site would be a few thousand pages. Managing such a project does
not daunt me, but I will not be doing the data entry. If you have typed up some
of Dr. Miller's texts which you would like to share pease email them to me and
will put them on line, giving you the appropriate credit. MS-Word, WordPerfect
or any other formatted text is preferred.
All of J.R. Miller's works
are out of copyright, so you are free to copy and distribute them as you feel
fit. In the USA, all works published before 1923 are out of copyright. In
Canada and the UK the rule was 50 years after the death of the author. Which
means 1962 in the case of Dr. Miller. For works nor yet out of copyright, these
rules have been undergoing revision, so don't apply these guidelines to other
authors or countries.
If you have comments, advice, notice errors, or
other input, please e-mail me: otherwise
enjoy.
